Nadia and Carol

Nadia Comaneci is a Romanian gymnast (born on the 12th of November, 1961, in Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej (now Onestiin Gheorghe Gheorghiu dej, now Onesti Romania). She was the first gymnast to score a perfect 10 during an Olympic event. Bela Karrolyi, a Romanian gymnastics teacher who later became Comaneci's coach, first discovered Comaneci at the age of six. Comaneci participated for the first time in the national junior championships. She finished 13th. The following year she won the title of champion. At her first international contest in 1972, she took the top spot by winning three gold awards. Her debut as a Senior in 1975, she beat Russian Lyudmila Turkishcheva, the five-time European champ winning four golds and a silver. In 1976, she was the first female athlete in the world who used a double backwards salto in order to take off parallel bars.
